Racing at Atlantic Motorsport Park |
- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Port Perry, Ontario - The fourth round of the 2019 Canadian
Superbike Series (CSBK) took place on July 18-21, at
Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. The weather
was a whole mix of things, but the one constant was the record hot
temperatures which made it very difficult for the riders. Since this weekend was a
double-header, qualifying took place on the Friday. Ben Young, on the
Scot-Build/Hindle/BMW S1000RR, was again at the top of the board and took
pole in qualifying for the Mopar Pro Superbike race. Jordan Szoke, on the
Mopar Express Lane/Hindle/Kawasaki ZX-10R came 2nd in qualifying, followed by
Trevor Daley on the Parts Canada/Suzuki GSX-R1000. On Saturday, the weather was
extremely hot and track temperatures were rising. At the start of the Mopar
Pro Superbike Race 1, Daley was able to pull ahead and get the holeshot,
followed by Young and Szoke close behind. At the end of lap 2, an unfortunate
incident happened between Young and Szoke, sending Szoke flying off his
ZX-10R. Young was able to ride off the track and re-join the raced, but was
now in 10th position. Young put his head down and rode his heart out trying
to regain at least a closer spot to the podium. To everyone's dismay, Young
managed to make his way back up to the front of the pack. On the last lap in
the last corner, Young passed race leader Samuel Trepanier (on the Blysk
Racing/Hindle/BMW S1000RR) for the win! Young's nickname for the weekend was
the "Comeback Kid" as everyone was astonished that he was able to
to gain the top spot on the podium after finding himself in 10th place after
the mishap. Samuel Trepanier came in a very close 2nd place, followed by
Trevor Daley in 3rd place. "It was definitely an exciting
and eventful race", said Young. "The racing incident was
unfortunate, as we felt we had a strong pace to cross the line with a healthy
margin. It was unbelievable to come through and take the win from so far back." |

On Sunday for the Mopar Pro Superbike Race 2, the
weather was just not cooperating. As the feature race was about to get
underway, the skies turned black and a bout of torrential downpour started.
The race was delayed until the weather cleared. Once better weather had
returned, the riders were given the all-clear for a shortened Superbike race.
The track was still wet, but the weather conditions had improved enough to
start the race. Ben Young had a great start and grabbed the holeshot, with Szoke
close on his tail. By the 9th lap, Szoke was able to make a pass for the
lead. Szoke maintained the lead for the rest of the race, while the gap
behind grew bigger. Szoke crossed the finish line in 1st, followed by Young
in 2nd and rookie to the Superbike class racer Tommy Casas, on the Parts
Canada/Hindle/Yamaha YZF-R1, came in 3rd place. "I didn't get the best of starts, but I typically do pretty
well in wet races, so I was able to work my way to Ben just as the track
started to dry out a bit and the tires really came together," Szoke
said. Casas, on his first-ever Pro Superbike podium, said: "I
really enjoy riding in the rain, and I'm extremely happy to have put my
Yamaha R1 on the podium for my very first time. Hopefully there will be more
to come." |

In the Liqui Moly Pro Sportbike
Class Race 1, defending champion Tomas Casas, on the Peterborough
Cycle/Hindle/Yamaha YZF-R6, took home another 1st place finish. After getting
a really great start, Casas was able to stay in the lead pack for the entire
race. Although Will Hornblower (Yamaha YZF-R6) was right on his tail, Casas
managed to keep him there right to the finish line. Casas took the top spot
on the podium, followed by Hornblower in 2nd and Sebastien Tremblay, on the
Turcotte Performance/Hindle/Kawasaki ZX-6R in 3rd place. On Sunday for the Liqui Moly Pro
Sportbike Class Race 2, Hornblower got a terrific start and never looked
back, leading the entire race. Tremblay was able to make a pass on Casas and
the three top riders passed the finish line in that specific order:
Hornblower taking the top spot, followed by Tremblay in 2nd and Casas in 3rd. "Sunday's race was not what I
had hoped for, but I was glad to at least put it on the podium," Casas
said. "Doing both classes on a double-header weekend, especially at a
track like Shubie, it really took a toll on me, but now I look forward to
bringing this home at CTMP." |
